Some years ago, Brian had told me, “Get a pair of warm boots because you are going to need them.” “Why?” I asked him. I already suspected my brother was alluding to the blizzard that hit New Jersey in early 2002. After confirming my suspicion, he remarked that I should make sure it was “waterproof”.
I was living in a small studio apartment in Toms River, at the time. I’ve only been back in Toms River, NJ since July 2002 and it was now December. I looked outside the window and could see that snow was on the horizon. “I’ll walk over to Kohl’s and get the boots, today”, I told him.
I brought them and have been quite glad. Somehow, I don’t think Brian thought would wak through a stream with them. I did it twice while staying at Three Springs in Pennsylvania. The first time was during a hike to a waterfall. I still recall Brett being concerned about my walking through the stream and getting my feets wet. Poor Brett, he didn’t know the boots were really waterproof. I had found this out when having to walk through snow, a year before. My feet stayed warm and dry.
The second time I walked through a stream, the water was higher then the boots. The boots in question are the size of regular workboots. As you can guess, my boots were fine however it was not so for my socks and pants. I’ve no ideas of what the ladies who joined us thought, as they watched us walking through the stream. As Robin and I walked through the stream, we were quite relax and secure. I felt the same way, the first time around.
These days, the boots come in handy while powerwashing schoolbuses. “Barry, do you have any rubber boots? You’re going to need them when powerwashing.” asked Ted. “I got just the boots!” I replied with a grin. “They’re waterproof.”
Recently, while working with Ted, God showed me something. “Do you recall the sense of security and peace when walking through those streams?” This was the thought that floate to my mind while washing the schoolbuses. “Yes. I was relaxed and secure. I was not worrying about my feets.” was my mental response. “You were also relaxed when Ted hosed your feet. You really didn’t give it much thought.” came the internal voice. “This is how God desires you to feel in Him,” came the voice of the Holy Spirit.
Think about it.
If I am in Christ then I can feel safe and secure. It doesn’t mean I won’t notice anything and be oblivious. Hey, I did felt the stream’s current and felt Ted hosing my boots. Yet, I was not worried about it. Why? Because I knew that I could rely on the boots to keep my feets dry and secure. The same is true with God. Though I do expect my Heavenly Father to do far better then a pair of boots made by Man.
Don’t you?
